Nicotine and nicotine addiction
Tobacco contains nicotine – substance, which possesses apparent capacity to cause addiction. Most of tobacco products are the instruments for the quick and effective nicotine delivery to the brain and as a result the fast beginning and permanent addiction support is achieved.
Nicotine produces some compensative effects, including suppression of irritation, weigh loss, improvement of the attention and psychomotor functioning. It’s supposed, that these effects are concerned with stimulation of dopaminergic tracts in mesolimbic system. Compensative effects create positive reinforcement of smoking, and the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal, which come in some hours after smoking and last for 4 weeks, create negative reinforcement.
During every year approximately 40% of smokers make serious attempt to quit smoking, but only 3% manage to do it.
